Manufactured Housing is 1 out of 10 New Home Sales

In demand shifting away from manufactured homes to higher quality modular home designs? The Department of Commerce, Bureau and Census compared new Single Family home sales to modular and manufactured home shipments and reported that in 2005 modular housing accounted for 9.7% of new home sales.

The Institute of Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) reported a total of 116,443 manufactured homes shipped in 2005 to their new owners.  What is surprising is that total shipments of manufactured homes are down almost 31% over 2002’s statistics of 168,491 shipped homes.

While the Manufactured Housing Institute reported that overall shipments of manufactured housing are down, over the same period of time shipments of modular homes grew by 15%.  It appears that more and more consumers are shifting towards modular construction that builds to state and local codes as opposed to manufactured codes that built to the national HUD building code.

This is not surprising as more people look to modular homes as an alternative to stick built homes, yet still want the high level of customization and design selection that is available with modular home manufacturers.
